What it feels like when legal medical cannabis is finally coming to town after interminable years of waiting… …as Maryland’s program is ready to roll out its first four dispensaries.

14 growers, 12 processors and nine dispensaries have been licensed by the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. Roughly 15,000 Marylanders have signed up, with 8,500 of them already certified. Nearly 550 health-care providers have registered with the state to recommend the drug to their patients.

Excerpts:

“The dispensary invited the media, prospective patients and curious members of the public in for a ribbon cutting and a tour…

Andy Grossman, a partner, said the business opened its doors to dispel stereotypes and concerns.

‘This is not a pot shop. This is a medical facility,’ said Grossman.

Former Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Eugene Monroe, a medical marijuana advocate and Green Thumb Industries (GTI) partner, helped show people around the building during the open house.

‘It’s warm and welcoming, and it will let you feel comfortable bringing anyone here,’ he said.

Monroe, who played seven pro seasons, said he’d relied on heavy-duty painkillers to cope with of the aftermath of surgeries and football injuries, but that since he began using medical cannabis, he’s been able to stop taking the dangerous medication.

GTI is licensed in Illinois, Nevada, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and now Maryland.

The store will offer an assortment of oils, concentrates, pills, transdermal patches, tinctures and flowers.

After her visit, Denise Dougherty, 70, said she’s considering medical marijuana as a potential treatment for some of her pain.

‘I’m taking opioids, and I would like not to do that,’ she said.”

TRUCE note: Each state’s program has to be self-contained from seed to sale to avoid running afoul of federal law, but we’re noticing that as companies develop expertise in growing, manufacturing, standardizing and analyzing, labeling, packaging and dispensing – along with having money from existing operations – they are leveraging these advantages to open satellites in other states.

Good luck, Maryland. The great majority of Utahns support having the same rights here….
