” ‘While I certainly do not support the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, the evidence shows that cannabis possesses medicinal properties that can truly change people’s lives for the better,’ Hatch said while proposing the Medical Effective Drugs Act, an initiative to encourage research into medical cannabis.”
While there is still some daylight between between the Senator and the backers of the ballot initiative – there’s absolutely no doubt that the Senator’s public position and activity on the issue are evolving in what we consider to be positive directions that give patients hope for meaningful changes in federal cannabis policies.
Growing Congressional support for a increasing number of reform-oriented bills are sprouting signs of a potential federal thaw, even despite the fact that the current Attorney General remains implacably opposed to any change in 1970’s Controlled Substances Act with its notoriously mis-calibrated “Schedules” of drugs.
We’re also pleased that the Senator has held cordial meetings and discussions with local patient advocates.
